The History of Koi

Koi have developed from the common carp which begun life in Europe and east Asia. These fish were able to withstand different water conditions and climates enabling them to travel to various parts of the world, one of which being Japan. This is where they get their other common name of ‘Japanese Carp’. Before this, Carp were used mainly as a food source and for not much else.
The breeding of carp for colour mutations begun in the early 1800's, in Japan. Since then many colours and patterns have been developed over the years, by various Koi keepers. Colours including most, including, black, white, yellow, blue, red and many more. The most popular, being the red and white variety, known as Kohaku.

The hype of Koi exploded after the Tokyo exhibitions in 1914. Most people were unaware of the fascinating world of Koi, and all the colour combinations that had been discovered. Behind the scenes Koi had truly become a sought after ornamental fish. The interest spread throughout Japan and then world wide. Koi are now available not only through specialists and exhibitions but you can buy Koi online and at some pet shops.

Koi means 'Carp' and 'love and friendship' in Japanese, and so people often buy Koi to be given as gifts or as gestures. Even still new varieties of Koi are being discovered as more and more people are breeding them.
